There are quite a lot of 'golf balls' there, but generally smaller than the three that used to be at Fylingdales.
I can't say for certain, but I believe that 'golf balls' are there to cover parabolic antennae, either to protect them from the weather or quite possibly to protect their design from prying eyes.
Again, I'm not sure of their exact use, but I understand that parabolic antennae, because they are highly directional, are used to receive signals from satellites and possibly to send signals the other way.
I don't think they could efficiently receive signals from ground stations, even if bounced off ionised atmospheric layers; ordinary antennae (of similar design to radio and TV antennae) would be used for that, and I'm sure there are some like that at Menwith Hill too.
