British aircraft banned from flying over Ireland

I wonder what they are hoping to do to prevent us doing so.
Even if we respect their demands, what would they do if we impose similar demands on them.
Look at a map of Europe.
The territory of Eire is not extensive and, if necessary, we could easily bypass their country if flying to the US or Canada. A great circle flight there would head to the north of Ireland.
Conversely, our territory extends over 500 miles in a north-south direction. If the Irish want to fly to Europe, they'd have to go to great expense and incur time penalties to fly around our territory.
Without wishing to offend anyone personally, making jokes about the Irish is a long established practice in this country. This latest bright idea is only going to encourage more humour at their expense.
