I don't want to watch a serial with lots of doom and gloom and violence and misery.

However, there was something about the sound of Years and Years that intrigued me, so I decided to give it a go, and was pleasantly surprised.

Another one I gave a go to the other day was The Virtues. Yes, it is about someone with a lot of history, and a lot of sadness when his young son emigrates to Oz with the ex and the ex's new partner, but there was a lot of love in it.
It stars Stephen Graham (who was the murdered John Corbett in Line of Duty), as a recovering alcoholic, and his acting was superlative.

There was a very graphic scene where, after he says goodbye to his son, he falls off the wagon big, big time. However, there is enough to intrigue me as to where the storyline will go, because he is taking off to Ireland where he had a troubled upbringing, and I want to see where the storyline goes.

Besides which, despite the sadness and bleakness, there was a small glint of hope towards the end of the first episode that was very heartening, and makes you sympathise a lot with the character.

The script and direction was first class, too.
Pyxell, l watched, The Virtues, last night. Isn’t Stephen Graham a magnificent actor. I thought the little boy who played his son was a good actor too.

Re: Years and Years

I might have given "Years and Years" a go because Jessica Hynes (Stevenson) is in it but then I saw the name "Emma Thompson" so I had to give it a miss .....

Omah, I have to say, Emma Thompson was one of the reasons, l avoided this programme in the first place.
I have never heard of Jessica Hynes so can’t remember noticing her in this programme.

I used to detest her and her luvvie-husband Kenneth Branagh, with equal passion but Branagh was so good in the C4 series Shackleton than I forgave him. Thompson, OTOH, has done nothing (IMO) to redeem herself.

Jessica Stevenson (later Hynes) was in The Royle Family (girl next door), Spaced (flatmate) and, later, Shaun of the Dead (Yvonne) and the Bridget Jones movies (Magda) amongst others.

Jessica Hynes wasn't in it much; in fact I only noticed her towards the end!

Emma Thompson wasn't in the first episode for very long at all!
And then she was only 'on the TV'!
I don't know why you both find her repulsive; She was brilliant in 'The Taming of the Shrew' and I saw her recently in 'The Remains of the Day' with Anthony Hopkins, which was wonderful!

Still, each to their own!

Omah, I have seen some of the Royle Family episodes but not the other two you mentioned.
l watched Bridget Jones on a DVD a while back but can’t remember all that were in it.

Re: Years and Years

Why all the dissing of Emma Thompson. Who can deny that she is one of Britain's finest actresses?

The programme itself? Right on the button. Loved it and it's so true to reality. Trump getting through to the end of his term and pressing the proverbial 'button' is unfortunately too believable to be true.
Looking forward very much to episode 2.

Btw...how did they predict Doris Day's death the day she actually died?!
As I say, it's so spot on.

I never said that I find her repulsive .....

But Emma Thompson and husband Greg Wise are Britain's most hilariously sanctimonious luvvies.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbi...s-luvvies.html

Emma (estimated to be worth £30 million): ‘It’s not my fault that there is this gap between rich and poor; it is the fault of governments. I want a different world. One where I don’t wake up thinking I’m so lucky to be able to feed my daughter.’

‘It’s unfortunate and I really wish I wouldn’t have to say this, but I really like human beings who have suffered. They’re kinder.’
Greg (only worth £1 million): ‘I have actively loved paying tax, because I am a profound f***ing socialist and I believe we are all in it together.’
Emma: ‘Tony Blair, going around earning money and accruing wealth, someone that was supposed to be a socialist — it is a tragic journey watching that.’
Greg: ‘We have six or seven [guests] every night for tea. It’s how everyone used to live.’
Emma, on why she sent their daughter to the private, £18,000-a-year Highgate School: ‘We’re not in the catchment area for Camden School For Girls [a state school regularly described as ‘outstanding’ by inspectors, attended by Emma and dubbed ‘the Left’s finishing school’ because it’s favoured by wealthy socialists who can afford to live in its catchment area] but she might go there for the sixth form.’
Greg, talking about the part of Hampstead where they live — in a house estimated to be worth around £4 million: ‘[We live] in the poor bit. Em was born at the bottom of the street and now we live in the middle.’
Greg, advocating the use of biogas digesters to produce fuel from farm waste: ‘I’m very interested in poo. We don’t have a very good relationship with poo, and we should have.’

‘I’m best feral. When I don’t wash. I’m a bit of wild man. I whittle. I have a welder now. I am going to get a lathe.’
Just some examples of their "detachment" .....

Re: Years and Years

Omah, is this relevant whatsoever to Emma Thompson's role in this drama?
