Mine are laid vertically on their ends so it doesn't really matter to me but if I had a choice it would be from the top to stop the loose end brushing against the wall.

You’ve put a lot of thought into this. I didn’t consider the end brushing against the wall and attracting all sorts of nasties on the end.
