The "state" cure would be a disaster all round - it would cost the tax payer billions and billions a year in drug discovery and failed clinical trials. Also, the government wouldn't pay the money for the top scientists, data managers, regulatory staff, clinicians, doctors, research scientists etc etc etc.

It would be a complete disaster.
Is that not happening even as we speak?

Re: Government told to ‘come clean’ over Covid deals by spending watchdog

PwC has so far raked in more than £30m in government contracts during the pandemic

https://www.cityam.com/pwc-bags-2-5m...see-ppe-audit/

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) yesterday published details of a £2.5m contract with the UK’s largest accounting and advisory firm that will last until the end of June.

The Big Four Firm has been awarded 26 other Covid contracts — the second-highest number of successful bids by any company, according to data from Tussell.

The latest PPE contract means PwC has so far raked in more than £30m from government contracts during the pandemic, including a deal worth more than £226,000 handed out in October to oversee a review of the government’s beleaguered Test and Trace programme.

Meg Hillier, chair of the public accounts committee, said she was shocked by the increase in consultancy costs, adding that her committee had launched an inquiry into the government’s reliance on the private sector during the coronavirus crisis.

“Consultancy work on very specialist technical issues can have a place but we have a tendency to pass work over to highly paid consultants as a first choice too often,” she said.

Figures revealed last week by social care minister Helen Whately showed that the government has spent more than £375m on private consultancy services for NHS Test and Trace — the equivalent of £163,000 per consultant.
Of course, £2.5m is small potatoes when compared to the £200m profit made by Serco from its less-than-commendable involvement in the lacklustre £12bn Test & Trace program .....

The government isn't a Pharma company and doesn't own one, so private money and investments are used for drug discovery (and wasted billions) instead of tax payers money that should be used for other things..

Although the communists like Omah would like the state to govern and do everything, in practice governments are useless, especially the civil service so the private sector is the best place for these kinds of industries. In fact, the private sector is the best place for all industries, including the NHS in mu opinion.

I would have to agree.

If pharma had been government-owned we probably wouldn't see the likes of this come from a British company:

"A groundbreaking pill-based vaccine which could one day transform the fight against Covid is being developed by a Sussex biotech firm."
"The oral vaccine will begin clinical trials on Americans this month and ImmunityBio is applying for regulatory approval to run tests in Britain too."
"Wayne Channon, chief executive of iosBio, said: "With our capsule you wouldn’t need medical professionals to administer the vaccine, you could send this out on Amazon Prime and have everyone vaccinated by Saturday.”

I hope you can read it (I know The Telegraph is sub-only apart from a free trial) because it contains some interesting stuff including how it works.
It's a game-changer if trials are successful.

When we lived in Hertford, a near neighbour worked for one of the Pharma companies and it was she who explained why new drugs could cost the earth for each dose. It's not just the cost of developing one particular medicine that works, it's about recovering the cost of all the failed attempts to find drugs that fight over diseases, viruses, etc. Add to that the cost of administering and carrying the drugs trials, preparing all the documentation and submitting multiple versions for the various approvals authorities and so on, and the cost of and maintaining the appropriate patents.

Yeah, spot on Percy.

R&D costs are horrendous - something the tax payer would be very upset about when 9/10 trials fail.

Spot on !

We have pills that have tiny processors that can connect to a phone over bluetooth so can do diagnostics for temperatures dissolution rate, injection/ejection times and also other funky stuff too.

It's a fascinating industry.

It is indeed fascinating and it's another area where the UK are among world leaders in the technology.

I did have to look twice at that paragraph though .......... for some reason it didn't read as "ejection" the first time around.

The cool thing for geriatrics is that the carers can be notified when a tablet is taken via text message to their phones, so they can get updates as needed. If no tablet is taken on 3 or 4 successive occasions, alerts can be raised to provide assistance etc.
