Re: Rates of Gout on the Increase

I have had a couple of attacks of gout, minor but painful. I did find Simvastatin (cholesterol) caused me endless problems with joint pain so gave it up Result for me but not all are affected. I'm sure other medication can cause gout type symptoms.

Yep .... my GP gave me gout ! Lol

Also tinnitus, swollen legs, itchy skin, a cough .... erm can't remember what else but then, having almost exhausted the BP drugs because they didn't work, we discovered that I have 'white coat syndrome' which was why I was showing high BP

I don't need BP meds but they say that once gout is in your system it stays there

Rates of gout on the increase?

quote..... Gout is more common in people who are overweight or obese and in those who have high blood pressure or diabetes......

Considering the alarming rise in the rate of people who now present with the conditions above...it is not surprising.

Incidentally ~ my first attack was in my left ankle and happened in the night. A total surprise and I wondered how I could have broken my ankle as I slept

I have White Coat syndrome too but am on BP meds called Twynsta as GP says he thinks I probably react to any emotional strain or stress in the same way as to him taking my BP!

My stepson has gout - nothing to do with drinking or obesity but probably connected with his fibromyalgia. he has to have an anti-pain blood infusion every month. Not at all pleasant.

Must just say when my husband had his attack he was the slimmest he had ever been, oddly if obesity causes it since he gained weight he hasn't had another attack.

To be honest BV I have known an awful lot of drinkers in my day, men and women, and I never heard one of them complain of having gout, bad stomachs, liver problems, sore heads etc., but not a one with gout. I love port and drink about 2 bottles a week, never had any problems either.

Re: Rates of Gout on the Increase

I may or may not have had an episode of gout. I woke one morning with a badly swolen and painful wrist. The Doc suggested Ibuprofin & paracetamol, but the problem persisted. I then saw another GP and asked him if it was gout. He said that it might be but he couldn't be sure. He took a blood sample and that 'suggested that gout might be the cause'. He also suggested physio on my wrist. He also stopped my Bendroflumethiazide prescribed for raised BP as this can pre-dispose you to gout.

The very experienced physiotherapist said that it didn't look at all like gout to her - more like an inflamation of the wrist joint. The GP responded that sometimes gout could cause a secondary infection. So, it may or may not have been gout.

I also discovered from my GP that various virus infections can cause gout-like swelling especially in the extremities of the limbs.

B-V, I would challenge the idea that healthy food is any more expensive than any other. It's education - not cost that needs to be addressed.
