Re: baby Charlie Gates

I don't understand why the baby had to be moved to a hospice to die .
Why didn't the hospital just remove his ventilater ?

Not sure Muddy, but I think maybe the parents didn't want Charlie to die in the hospital.
You remember they wanted to take him home to die, but couldn't, so I believe the hospice was the alternative.

Correct me if I am wrong, anybody.

Because hospitals are horrible places to die - so cold and clinical. Hospices are more caring and humane and are a much better environment to live out your last few days.

Re: baby Charlie Gates

When my grand daughter died it was upsetting for my daughter and partner to hear other babies around. Although they were given a private quiet room they had to pass the wards and baby units, visitors etc.
I think probably a hospice is better equiped and deal with these upsetting stuations all the time.

Re: baby Charlie Gates

It was away from the glare of publicity. It gave baby Charlie a dignified death.

Re: baby Charlie Gates

You know, everybody talks about dying with dignity, but I had no idea what they actually meant.... so I looked it up.

I found so many different meanings, but it still didn't explain it to me..... probably because it meant different things to different people.

Surely this means that everybody could have different idea of what dying with dignity means to them. For me it would mean quiet privacy and, with or without help, just slipping into a pain free permanent sleep.

I believe that is what GOSH wanted to do for Charlie and, although I have huge sympathy for his parents, I am glad they gave him an opportunity to end his suffering.
