I've loved reading through this thread and it's given me a few laughs but, what we have to remember is, there is no such thing as an English language. Ours is made up from Celts, Old Irish, Norse, Danish, Germanic, Roman, French and lots of other languages thrown in due to being conquered by many different countries or other settlers in historic times so it's a mixed pot.

Here, in Lancashire, we have a dialect, as do other parts of the country but, for example, we'll say something like "get agate" meaning get going/get moving. The word agate doesn't come from the mineral. It's pronounced a-gate, with the initial letter a shortened, as in abridge.

No wonder it's so hard for poor foreigners to learn!

Here we eat Scones (pronounced scons) with Jam & Cream but the town is called Scone(pronounced Skown). Weird Hey !!
