Re: The despicable scumbags!!!

Hi

I must admit to thinking that perhaps I should have lived in this Utopian Socialist Paradise instead of getting up at stupid o'clock to go to work.

Re: The despicable scumbags!!!

You think we haven't done that ? Even now my husband is up 4am and does 60 to 70 hours a week. I'm lucky I was able to give that up and only work evenings and nights now but I've done my time 4am to 8am then 5pm to 10pm.

My husband (69) left for work at 7.30am and was rarely home before 7.30pm, but usually much later as he had meetings etc. The only day he didn't do some sort of work was Christmas Day, he even took it on holiday with him, which was a bit annoying. It really bugs him now that he can't do any work of an academic nature anymore, as he has only half a functioning brain.

Re: The despicable scumbags!!!

My wife and I were so lucky, we both worked a 37 hour week and had plenty of holidays, we were well paid with generous overtime payments and bonuses.
We were both offered an early retirement plan with very generous severance lump sums and occupational pensions.
All of this due to hard fought agreements forged by our unions (of which we were both members, me being a union official) and managements.
I am now 71 and have been retired since 1991 (25years)
I do feel very sorry for all those youngsters working long hours for a pittance and trying hard to save for a house etc.
Mrs Thatcher destroyed our unions and blackened their names now managements can ride roughshod over their work forces knowing full well they can do nothing about it.
The adage here to remember is....you shall reap what you sow.

I'm very happy for you Malcolm, it's a shame others have believed all the rather wicked press about benefits and low wage families. You are right we need the unions again but I can't see that happening they have set well off against anyone struggling far too well IMO.

The reverse side of that coin been ...
If benefits provided the essentials in life and not the luxuries many more might get off their backsides and do a honest days work.

Neither is it just a matter of money. It's a mindset.
I've known someone say to me regarding their entitlement to benefits ....'why should the government get off scot free' .. in other words they didn't want to miss out on what they thought was their share due to them.
Actually paying their own way in life was an alien concept.
Whether to work was actually a life style choice.

Re: The despicable scumbags!!!

If we are into 'my dad is bigger that your dad' I think I can top you all having for years has just half a day off a week and a day a month being available to work as needed 24/7 the rest of the time .

My husband also worked 24 hours a day at times. Many soldiers and servicemen don't work an 8 hour day, conflicts are not so accommodating.

The point is people choose to do a job, sometimes there isn't a lot of choice and you get what you can where you can to support yourself that's life . We all do our best to survive but I don't think anyone should expect others to support them when they are capable of work. There are far too many 'benefits' now propping people up who shouldn't really be getting them .

Some of the unions nearly ruined the UK!

I don't disagree but there has to be work for people and it has to pay enough to live on or people will continue to be supported by the state, while businesses get richer.
