Bearing in mind that I see the French nation as our enemy, I hope I don't sound too ungracious if I describe this as good news!
Although France is obviously disunited, I'm afraid that they are not alone. When I think about the changes that have happened to this country over my lifetime (the last 67 years), we as a nation are certainly not as united as we once were.
There has always been a constant disagreement between the left and the right politically which, since the 1970s and the great trade union problems, has beset us and our well-being as a nation.
Strangely, compare other European countries - Germany for example - and we see far less of an ongoing and constant left-right battle. Most do have such opposing groups in their parliaments, but somehow they seem able to work together for the common good.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could throw off this disagreement?
