The wife of one of my cousins in New England was in the position of living in America 'not entirely legally'! (The rest of the family, I hasten to add, are there perfectly legitimately.)

She was obliged to sit a test to determine whether she could become a citizen by naturalisation (I use the English spelling here!). This was a number of years ago when we were visiting them.

I haven't been poking my nose in to their affairs, but I believe that she was accepted and granted citizenship. I am assuming that the questions she would have had to answer were along the lines of those on the web site that Tippi kindly provided.
