Re: Brexit and the EU
Whatever happened to the much-lauded British backbone? The Junkers, Merkel’s, Macron’s and Tusk’s are just as scared of losing their positions over this Brexit debacle as any British MP within our government. So 27 nations are opposing our intentions to leave, but we should only concern ourselves with the main protagonists who are Germany, France, and Poland. The remainder are inconsequentially divided with their individual political concerns as to be unimportant at this stage.
Angela Merkel’s tenure is almost at an end and Macron’s political future is questionable at best. Best we zero in on these two to achieve what kind of a result we want by some serious opposition to their frequent demands and fear campaigns. Theresa May has weathered a political turmoil, not always of her own making over the entire process, but there is no disputing that deep down she would prefer remaining within the EU. For this, we need a real leader whose heart is firmly behind a Brexit strategy that will work to the advantage of the UK as a complete entity.
It is time to get the appropriate leader and negotiating team in place to start playing the down and dirty politics the EU employs. Start by making emphatic demands rather than proffering appeasement gestures and unnecessary compromises. The present situation with its total lack of purpose, objectivity, and progress is making us the laughing stock of the world. These people are not our friends; their only interest is in the £ 40 billion they expect to receive at the final reckoning, although there are no legal grounds for their monetary demands. There may be moral ones but nothing enforceable. There should be no talk of money until all our requirements are satisfactorily met and agreed.
Our government needs to grow some spine by letting the EU know we are united and resolute in what we want and cannot be dictated to by a jumped up totalitarian regime. Let loose the dogs of verbal war around that negotiating table and watch them fold as they always have done when confronted by the British spirit of our past. Cometh the man or woman of the moment – who will it, be?
