Because the aircraft is pressurised at around 8000 feet once the thing goes higher the external low pressure draws air from it. Like it's said, nature abhores a Hoover so no fan, just a valve controlled by pressure differential between inside pressure and outside pressure.
How is fresh and stale air separated? Distribution inside the cabin is such that air is ducted from above the passengers and extracted from beneath them and then fed through the air conditioner that includes the filters, mixed with fresh air, then back to the cabin from which a quantity is discharged in order to achieve the total replacement in circa 2 mins requirement.

Do they have more than one relief valve to let the excess pressure
out of the aircraft?
And regarding the top to bottom flow of the incoming air, do they have
suction grids or some such to facillitate this proceedure??
