Actually it wasn't - well apart from a sore throat* that is!
The procedure is done under a general anaesthetic and there's no residual pain.
It takes about two hours from going to sleep to waking up. Apparently one can have an epidural if you ask or if the gas passer (anesthesiologist) thinks it would be best.
*Sore throat? Yes - from being intubated.
