Why should they change to suit others can't we all just do our own thing, I know capitalism seems to favour global things but each country should be free to decide when or if it celebrates special days.

Julie, I wasn't advocating that they change (although that would be nice) mrely that for 'political' reasons, America and Canada have chosen not to align themselves with the remainder of the world.

Julie they're only different because of their paranoia about anything which might be construed as 'Socialist' or 'Communist'.

Joe, me old pal, me old beauty - that is sophist rubbish, like Mothers' Day, International Worker's Day on 1st May is an American (USA) invention (from Chicago?) taken up by Europe, International Worker's Day is a socialist celebration which came out of the Second International which, I think, dates from the beginning of the 20th century to the Russian Revolution. (Economic History was one of my favourite subjects at school)

The others are celebrating Labour Day which is far older (as AC has already told you) and has nothing to do with 1st May. To keep saying it is and claiming the North American governments won't have Labour Day on the 1st May because of paranoia is a nonsense.

Wrong again Bruce matey, - International Workers day arose at the FIRST INTERNATIONAL in Paris ((attended by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels).

It is no good making this nonsense up - and you keep doing it.

Here are the archives with all the documents for the First International, there is no reference to May Day or international workers day.

Re: Labour Day/Thanksgiving in the UK?

I think lots of holidays have changed over the years. I can remember celebrating May Day in early years at school. Which consisted of dancing round the May Pole (Flag Pole in my school). I think that then it was a British festival when the May Queen was crowned with dancing and Festivities.

South Australia Celebrates Labour Day on the 2nd Monday in October.
