Re: Traditional Parties Making a Comeback

Can't recall ever having a birthday party when I was a kid . . .
Come to think of it, never had one as an adult either!

Re: Traditional Parties Making a Comeback

My younger brother was always the apple of my mothers eye and I recall his having many a birthday party but cannot recall a single one for myself. However I do recall one party when I was 11 or12 when I was not so much the centre of attention as I was the 'reason' for the event. Every child in the street was invited, regardless of age or gender. Anyone guess why?

Yup, I had the dreaded German measles, and the hope was all the kids would catch it. I do have a funny feeling that none did though .

Oh yes, fish paste sarnies then afterwards jelly and evaporated milk. A slice of birthday cake to take home afterwards. We all enjoyed ourselves though.

The last (and final) boyfriend I had, a few years ago, when it was his birthday, I baked a birthday cake for him and made it into a Scooby Doo cake as he loved Scooby Doo and I did a little birthday spread which my family members came to. When I brought the cake to him, his eyes welled up! He told me later that it was the first birthday cake he'd ever had - I was so surprised. I'm surprised reading on here that others had the same experience

Re: Traditional Parties Making a Comeback

I never had a birthday party as a child nor did I ever have a birthday cake.

My first birthday cake was bought for me by my children who were 11 at the time ..... I felt quite emotional by what they did. Since my daughter married 16 years ago, she has baked me a special birthday cake every year which has more than made up for me missing out as a child

Re: Traditional Parties Making a Comeback

I'm glad that parents are getting a bit of sense about parties at last, it got completely out of hand. When still a teacher I knew children who weren't allowed to accept invitations because their parents felt they couldn't afford a "good enough" present and parents who went into debt to match parties their off spring had been to. Madness!
