That is probably why some poor people who are being followed often get a sense of someone following and watching them, even without hearing footsteps, so can be a built in safety net.

There I was, curled on the sofa with a book - minding my own business - and I suddenly had the feeling I was being watched.
When I checked - two pairs of big green eyes were peering at me over the cushions and telepathing the message "our food dishes are empty - do something about it!" Cats are experts!!
