i agree with you here Gilly

Is it because they make people feel guilty?
Two reasons:

1). Do-Gooders are often naïve and do no "good" at all.

2). We used to be just as naïve and now we want to ridicule those "beneath" us just to prove we know more than they do.

I was trying to think of some famous 'do gooders'....
Sir Bob Geldolf, Bono, Mary Whitehouse.

"Do-Gooders"? I'm more inclined to think of Nigel Chamberlain, Monica Lewinski, and Dian Fossey.

Do-gooders are irritating because ...
As a rule their hearts are in the right place ...but they're often appallingly naïve and impractical.
If this is pointed out to them they then become aggressively moralistic and accuse their critics of not caring.
They can be a judgemental lot.

Do-gooders mean well but they have tunnel vision. They don't have a wide perspective and certainly never think of the consequences of their actions. I agree with what the poster said, if you are going to do good, keep it quiet - there is no need to broadcast and shine your light where it doesn't need shining.

I would suggest that it makes them feel that they have earned the right to take the high moral ground.
