You're right of course - the thing is this person has a computer 'and' a fax - we pay for both !

Used to use faxes at one time. Kinda old tech nowadays though. Found them messy to say the least.

Can you help with my question though - do you 'need' one, if you have a computer ....?

Eh, no if the computer is setup to act as a fax machine.

Re: FAX - Why .....?

Fax is old tech. If a computer has the appropriate software installed to emulate a fax machine then you have no need for a fax. Are we clear now? The important word here is 'emulate' .

Patsy it's supposed to be easy to send documents by email personally if I make the document using the computer it's reasonably so, if I have a ready made document that needs filling in or a signature etc I cannot work out how to get that sent by computer. I believe we would need a printer that has a scanner and ours doesn't. So for us a fax would be helpful but I take documents to work and fax them from there.

So answer is if you can scan documents into the computer you may not need one if you have no scanning facility you may need one.

Re: FAX - Why .....?

Yes, Julie is right. Signatures need a personal touch and the only way to achieve this is manually, therefore you need a scanner which allows you to input (computer jargon) a signed doc. Thing is though surely it is false economy to buy a printer without scanner capability? I mean do people really consider buying a fax machine so they can sign something? To be honest I can't remember what a fax machine was capable of and why I needed it in the first place? My printer prints and scans and was very cheap and before that I had a printer and separate scanner.
