Yep - can well understand that .....

Re: Blokey

As Baxter says there must have been many similar cases involving male senior officers which didn't make the headlines and I think this was singled out for attention because Commander West was the first female to take command of a warship..

Patsy one reason is you could be seen to be favouring your partner over other people under your command and should the relationship break down it could create all kinds of problems.

There is another aspect to this whereby officers go through something called 'positive vetting', all details of their private lives are scrutinised and romantic and sexual liaisons are taken into account because they have the potential to expose an officer to the possibility of blackmail.

Those who take command in the forces know this, it is part and parcel of their job.
and important that the rule of no contact is adhered to.

Nothing to do with gender, the Ministry of Defence confirmed it was a breach of the 'code of social conduct' on board the ship.

The code governs personal relationships, which are not permitted if they compromise operational effectiveness.

We have come a long way since the rum and the lash days on the waves when a woman on board was the height of bad luck, a woman at the helm, Long John Silver would twirl in his grave.

Hello Patsy - As you say it depends on the job, as the Captain of a Naval Frigate it's essential that all the ships crew carry out her orders immediately and without question, the whole crew and the ship itself could be in danger if they did not.

If she was having an affair do you think the man would be able to do that, whatever the order given

Plenty of industries where it wouldn't be so much of a problem. Real shame that a women who got to that elevated and responsible position should throw it all away.

Bit like the head of our local GP Surgery, a fantastic doctor and well respected, at age 48 had an affair with a patient, had to leave immediately, not sure if he will ever work in a GP Surgery again.
