Re: How Rich are You?

Don't whether it's because we aren't that well off but I actually enjoy a bit of bargain hunting, bit of a thrill when I can get something cheaper than I expected.

That's a pretty good attitude Comeandgo, though I still check the prices and look in the reduced pile before buying.

Them’s the words of the gospel writer Mathew, and not being a religious man meself I think he got it wrong, the rich have their kingdom of heaven here on earth, smoke camels and needle everyone else.
In our church service last year our vicar was talking of wealth,it was an eye opener when she told us she Only got £19.000 a Year and free accommodation. Her Free accommodation is i would say in the £600.000 price bracket .
My Husbands pension is less than half of that and we have survived on it for the last 5 years .Savings have dwindled but at least we have not had to be means tested by the SS.

Considering the work that vicars do, that's hardly being well paid. Still, I suppose that the ministry is a vocation rather than a job.

Sounds like a fortune to me. And they ask us to put money on the plate

Re: How Rich are You?

Julie, it would be interesting to know how many hours they work. Not just giving a couple of sermons to write and deliver on a Sunday - births, marriages, deaths, visits, probably loads of boring committee meetings etc..

I expect if you added all that up, the hourly rate isn't great. I also hear that the C of E does not regard their pay as 'salary', but an income sufficient to allow an adequate lifestyle. And the manse? Not always a modern executive dwelling, but often an old, unnecassarily large, uncomfortable house.

I don't think you can call them over-paid. Not like some of these "Tele evangelists" .

Re: How Rich are You?

I was just comparing it with my husband who starts at 5am, works over 60 hours a week. His wages fall below NMW as he is paid a salary each month which when you work out his hourly rate is just about £4 an hour. I don't begrudge anyone anything would just like a fair wage for those down here working their socks off for very little.

I know for a fact vicars are very badly paid for the work they do. My eldest daughter is a vicar, and she works her socks off for her parish, and gets paid a pittance.
