I’ve heard stories about batteries exploding, thankfully It never happened to us even when the kids and their kids were small, nearly all the toys they had were battery powered. We must have been doing something right that we didn't know about or else we were just lucky.
Personally I hate anything battery operated, you can never trust them, they conk out when you need them most and all the shops are closed, if they ever come out with a wind up Laptop I’ll be the first to buy one, well they already have a wind up radio so why not.
