I dont see any reason for the need to speed if thats what some want to do then there are track days to get the adrenalin going
I agree with you Aysa. It's been on Anglia news tonight about the numbers of people in our region who were caught doing up to 143MPH. I don't care how competent a driver they are, at that speed someone is going to get hurt sooner or later.

Re: Speed

143 mph is excessive in any road conditions, I absolutely agree, but 100 mph in the right conditions is not excessive.

Re: Speed

Unless your driving an emergency vehicle there is no need for anyone to do a 100 mph anywhere and it should be stopped.

Re: Speed

It is being stopped.....that's the reason you put the subject up for discussion isn't it?

How do you decide what's safe and what isn't? How can 69 mph be safe but 71 be dangerous? A speed limit is someone's best guess without any idea of the prevailing driving conditions.

Why stop someone driving at 100 mph if it's safe to do so? The Autbahns in Germany have no limits for most of their length but the accident rates are around half of those of the US who have quite strict speed limits on their equivalent roads.

I'll ride with a good driver at 100 mph rather than an idiot at 60 mph any day.

Quite so.....arrogant petrol heads who don't engage their brains when putting their foot down because they think the know better, are a menace on our roads.

Re: Speed

I'm afraid that I have to agree with 'Old Dog' about speed. I do however think that 100 mph is excessive though, most drivers would out of their comfort zone at such speeds. It's not the speed that kills, it's the drivers inability to select a suitable speed for the conditions or their ability. Speed limits can only ever be recommended, as sometimes they are set too fast for the conditions and it becomes the driver's responsibility to assess the situation. Every week in my local paper I read of yet another fatality on the roads which was caused by someone driving carelessly. The locals will pressure the council to lower the speed limit on the offending stretch of road, and it will be reduced to an unreasonable level but most people will adhere to the new limit, they will not be the drivers who will cause the next death, it will be the ones who disregard any speed limit as they did before.

I agree, anyone who doesn't engage their brain before driving at any speed is arrogant and dangerous.
However a skilled driver can be perfectly safe at high speeds provided the road, traffic and weather conditions are suitable.

Most drivers overestimate their own driving ability.

Re: Speed

Well its easy to reduce the speed of drivers, all modern cars are controlled by the ecu( a computer) so the ecu can be programmed to only go to a certain speed,( say 70mph) its known as a speed limiter, my van will only go to 70mph on the motorway
