There is a difference between supermarket petrol and branded petrol.The 'best' petrol to buy is Shell or BP. They both use additives which genuinely do give you a slightly higher MPG, but it does cost a couple of pence per gallon more.
Asda, Morrisons, Tesco and so on buy the cheapest petrol they can get. On some high-performance cars, this can produce an emission alarm. This happens on my Jag.
By the way, I didn't believe there was a difference between the various petrol outlets, but when told I did some research.

My car definitely ran better on Shell V Power and Esso Synergy Supreme+ than the other diesel available.

I agree, marginal additives are added at the storage point, but, it could be argued that a litre of fresh supermarket fuel, that is replenished every 48 hours or so, gives more bang per buck than treated stuff that has been lying around for a while.
