Re: Our roads

I'm sure there are parts of Aus where the roads are pretty crappy too
but the region I travel (40,000 kilometres a year), it's all pretty good.
A lot to do with the vehicle though, I guess.
My 6-year-old Rangie can handle just about anything.

Re: Our roads

If it's thought the roads are bad for motoring, they are worse for cyclists. Even though paying the same as motorists for the use of the roads, cyclists have to travel on the very roughest part of them. These being the crumbling tarmac edges and drain-holes etc. Some of these obstacles have to be ridden over directly because pulling out a bit to avoid them could be dangerous when a constant stream of motor vehicles is just a foot or two to the right.

Re: Our roads

They have put in a lot of cycle lanes round here, quite wide too so cyclist can avoid them in many places. Not keen on the ones they have to share with pedestrians though that seems dangerous for walkers.

Re: Our roads

At the moment we have an unprecedented amount of roadworks going on up here, and its all major works causing quite a bit of disruption to traffic.

So im left wondering why? Normally we see an increase before the new council budgets are announced, spending whats left from last years budget unless the new amount is cut.

Re: Our roads

What I find strange is that there are some roads with potholes that are never repaired and there are other roads which are resurfaced regularly when it's not necessary. I'm guessing it's something to do with councils using up their budget at the end of their financial year.

I have to agree with Pum though, having larger wheels on a vehicle does seem to ride out most of the holes.

Something to do with the areas too I suspect - the roads of the more better off parts of our town are repaired and resurfaced more regularly than anywhere else. Something to do with local councillors living there?

You may be onto something there, round here austerity brought about some very messy roundabouts and where we usually had summer planting now nothing, but round the council offices !!! Beautiful stunning displays.

Great news! So they've finally brought in road tax for cyclists?

That would be good also some way to identify the cyclist, at the moment it seems they can get away with a lot and no way to report them.

Cyclists already pay for road usage because, as said, roads are paid for out of the general taxation that we all pay. There hasn't been 'Road Tax' since 1937. The levy on cars is something entirely different, although it always has been popularly called Road Tax.
