the facility is only there to make it easier for members to remember in which threads they posted or if they wish to know when there is a reply to their post . To subscribe to a thread you select the option underneath your reply post where it says 'Thread Subscription' it looks like this..
. I don't use it myself I can keep track of my posts by using the 'Find all posts' on my profile page.
