Jeeeeeez, you're a barrel of joy, Spider.
Maybe the bloody balloons were significant to the extended family - or even to the child's friends ?

I think it did show unity! All those people, who probably didn't know the little boy, carrying balloons that showed they all cared. I think that was the emotion that made me cry , because I had never met him, I just knew of the tragedies via the local news.

I agree Pummy.

Also, sometimes people like to feel a sense of community, unity and solidarity. Support and kindness count for a lot to my mind.

They're not really for the dead though are they? It's for the living to say goodbye, show their respects, express their grief and wish them on their way.
I've seen some lovely funerals. The most tasteful was one with carriages and horses decked out with black plumes. Not great for traffic congestion but a very touching sight to see.

You are right Morti, this little boy may not have known, but around 300 people came to show how much they cared. The display of balloons and the use of many tissues, by the crowd, was very touching and I am sure they comforted the few relatives, who will still have the mothers funeral to attend.

I think the balloons were a lovely idea Twink and probably cost less than a packet of fags.

T Balloons have a particular significance for children particularly where bereavement is concerned.

They can represent 'letting something go' so a have a cathartic effect ask any organisation concerned with bereaved children, I am sure they will confirm this.

What a very sad and tragic story... I think the balloons have become a symbol of expressing grief when released at a funeral ... especially that of a child.

I can't believe you even said that, Tarantula. What an incredibly heartless thing to come out with!

That little boy would have loved his helium balloons when he was alive, and it's a lovely gesture. Fvck the expense!! (Sorry Mods, this person has made my blood boil).
Funerals a waste of money etc...you're a desperate and sad individual.
Do you post remarks like this for some sort of reaction, tarantula, a kind of controversy perhaps? Ignore list.
Sorry Twink.
