Re: Yawn!!! That awful time of year again

We have slowly but surely opted out of the commercialism of Christmas

We don't stock up or buy shed loads of extras. We get a bottle of baileys and some nice after dinner sweets.

Christmas dinner is the full monty, Turkey and Gammon and all the trimmings, because we actually like it and look forward to it. And we like the tradition of eating left overs for the coming week

We swap a small pressie after dinner and settle down to watch a comedy dvd and fall asleep in front of the fire

New year is a bit more hectic as the kids and grandkids come to stay for a few days. Four generations around the table, lots of noise and fun- and a lot of work tbh

This will be the first Christmas I haven't worked in years. The past 8 years only had Christmas Day off and back to a double shift on Boxing Day. So Christmas has always been a time to chill out, relax and put the feet up

Christmas is also tinged with sadness. My dad passed on Boxing Day 5 years ago, mother in law a week later. So for us we like to keep things peaceful and quiet and allow ourselves space to feel and to talk

Re: Yawn!!! That awful time of year again

Since my husband died I really don't enjoy Christmas. I go to one daughter one year and the other daughter the other year. I have told them to let me have Christmas to myself, but they say no way, I would only sit and mope.
But whats wrong with doing that?

I try and be happy to just keep them happy really.

Re: Yawn!!! That awful time of year again

My Christmas has become refined over the years, any presents usually bought via the internet during the preceding month, the groceries on Christmas eve, as well as the lights, candles etc not illuminated until Christmas eve night.

The day itself again has been brought to a sensible level, not a festival of overindulgence just a steady relaxing day, filled with a slightly altered state for the senses, and a break from a mid winter spell of cold and dark.

I attempt to add to others who dont have my level of comfort by aiding charities who help those less fortunate if i can with material goods etc.

It is a time of personal reflection from the past, this has both good and bad aspects to it.

I am with you Doc it's only November and already the Christmas rush seemed to have started in the shops.
I go out to get a few things and the car parks are full at 9:30 and I get jostled around in shops with isles narrowed by Chrismas tat.

I have more or less got my shed in the woods but still need to emerge occasionally to get the essentials.

Yup another BAH HUMBUG from me.
It's another con in my eyes, and many fall for it.
What puzzles me is the fact that it is the celebration of the birth of Jesus.
In the churches they make a model of the manger with the mock baby Jesus.
But Jesus was born a Jewish boy. Now why are there no celebrations in synagogues?
So this is yet another con. The Christians's are celebrating the birth of a Jewish boy, and in the bible, (book of tales) they call him a rabbi.
Confused.con.

Re: Yawn!!! That awful time of year again

I am another one on the side of Bah Humbug, to Christmas. There is far too much pressure in finding the perfect gift, preparing the perfect meal, decorating the house and generally just the craziness that goes with this holiday celebration. It is brainwashing at its best. Its got so that I actually dislike Christmas carols after being subjected to them blasting over the intercoms in malls since November. Too much !!

Re: Yawn!!! That awful time of year again

And another thing. The Virgin Mary. Yea right.
So her OH Joseph drags her with child in belly to Bethlehem, so it's claimed Joseph never dipped his wick.
So someone must have. If you were Joseph, you would have chucked her out on her ear hole, and said on your camel go back to your mum.
Again something don't sound right.
