There was a TMO discussion about increasing the contents insurance back in 2013 when there were power surges reported and a fire was averted. So the management company service charge should have included contents insurance. Tenants should have still been covered even if it's social housing.

This is a major problem in large cities and London in particular. Letting agencies have a nightmare with it because they can only check via regular inspections. It is a risk to the landlord as it's illegal to rent to those who do not have a right to be here, but if the landlord doesn't know he/she still bears responsibility. It also means that anyone living in this way would not be insured and the property insurance may be void. Of particular concern where the property is social housing and the sublet is made by someone on benefits who then makes money out of the sublet and the benefits system. Those sublet to are often vulnerable, either they cannot speak the language or are here illegally so they do not want to complain.

The government really need to do something about sub-letting, but what can they do?

Other London Boroughs have resorted to clearing out housing benefit claimants because of the scumbag 'nasty party's' cap on housing benefit, Kensington & Chelsea are no different and attempted to usie Grenfell Tower as an opportunity to do so. That coupled with their offer of just £10.00 per resident is despicable!!!

The worst living conditions are where they have numerous sublets. They've made it easier to sublet rather than putting on more restrictions.

In my mums street which is masionettes the council have sold off most of the properties. These were snapped up by residents (at a discount) who stayed for a couple of years and then sold on at huge profit. Most of the street is now owned by one property company. They have ripped out the kitchen and put it into the living room to make a large kichten /diner and turned the kitchen into a bedroom so now they have 4 bedroom flats.
These are rented to students or anyone else who is poor enough to be forced to live like a sardine.

When mum got water through her bedroom ceiling my brother went upstairs to complain and was shocked to find that there were 3 sets of bunk beds along one wall of the living/ dining area meaning at least an extra 6 people living in a flat only designed to hold 4 or 5.
Rents in London are staggering and this is how many are forced to meet the prices demanded by private landlords.
I doubt the real number of victims will ever be known.

You obviously know nothing about Brighton and are assuming that I was part of the same organisation - WRONG!!! I was a founder member of a neighbourhood Law Centre which had nothing whatsoever to do with the organisation you accuse me of belonging to.
