The hurricane, which wasn't a hurricane, was in 1987.

Ooer, that's a mixed bag of tricks for you, ruthio.
Stops us being complacent anyway.

Re: Hurricane coming

We are having bright sunshine one minute and then heavy rain the next, it is quite windy too.

I have the weather forecast for my postcode on my browser, it changes every couple of hours!
Well actually Tara, when I was a postman I used to watch the BBC weather every night to see what surprises mother nature had in store for me the following day. To my surprise it was deadly accurate, even to the time when rain was expected. Even now, I still observe the weather in order to plan walks. And for the next twenty four hours it's as near as damn it. The longer the forecast the more vague it gets though, this is why I don't take any notice of long range forecasts from the Daily Express or Daily Mail.

I saw a video of this the other day.Unbelievable that a storm can turn such a big forest to matchsticks.

I do hope it calms itself down before it gets here.

Your weatherman is right - just because you have winds at the lower end of hurricane force doesn't mean you have had a hurricane.

Where I live we get occasional East Coast lows with winds sometimes as high 150kph which is about the same wind speed as a Category 2 cyclone but it is not a cyclone the sea is not warm enough.

Likewise Tassie is in the roaring forties where winds can get up to 200kph, again hurricane / cyclone force but no one in Tasmania would say they had a cyclone.

A hurricane/cyclone only occurs over water, only between certain latitudes and only when the water is above a certain temperature. It is basically a rotating heat engine.
