This cartoon belongs to the ‘let all hang out’ era which started in the 1960s. During most of Punch’s history such a cartoon would have been unthinkable. It is also a portent of its final demise.
In the story the old woman who lived in a shoe didn’t know what to do. In the modern version she knows exactly what she can do – trade up to a wellington boot! That way her many children can each have a room of their own. The estate agent brings a touch of commercial reality to the story.
I wonder how athlete’s foot would show up in the living accommodation? Perhaps this question introduces too much reality.
The figures in the background indicate that the scene is a nudist club. Harry isn’t happy with stripping off in public, so he keeps his shorts on. His companion clearly wants to get brown completely all over. He isn’t happy with her wish. I suppose that she is offering to put on her bikini to please him. I do wonder why he agreed to come here in the first place.
This is another cartoon which could not have appeared any time in almost all of Punch’s previous existence.
Little green men also need to pass their driving test, or is it a pilot’s license? The driving lesson has to be here on earth and will make mysterious hollows on the countryside.
