Makes you wonder if every railway station should have armed guards though, the taser they used on him was ineffective twice because of a winter jumper he was wearing... makes you wonder if he was wearing a heavy jacket would it have worked at all?

I am not sure a gun would be a good idea, in spaces like that getting a shot into the right person could be impossible.

A deterrent would be good in many situations but with terrorists they don't deter easily as often they expect to die anyway.

Maybe and maybe not.... who knows what these idiots are thinking or what would deter them.

I think having armed guards at stations as they do in airports is worth considering

Or some sort of check in - walk through scanner to take guns/knives off people.

Agreed.
But defining 'sanity' is difficult.

Fanatical ? Obsessed ? No tolerance for the beliefs of others ? Cruel ? Misguided ? Hateful ? Violent ?
All of the above and more.

When the Brits wiped out Tasmania's aborigines in the 1820s or massacred 380 unarmed demonstrators at Amritsar in 1919,
when the Yanks bombed the crap out of Baghdad or the KKK terrorised the South,
when fundie-christians target abortion clinics or gays or whatever ....
are they all "insane"
or just conditioned and 'programmed' ?

They use terror as weapon, their attacks are well thought out and calculating, they are also highly intelligent.

...all of the above but some terrorists must be plain and simply 'thick'.
I am not talking the hierarchy here who sit in their ivory tower directing the lesser mortals but those who are too stupid to use a little logic and realise that if you and your family are dead what was the point of fighting because you won't be around to enjoy the spoils of war.

Ok, so some may believe in an 'after life' but they are clearly too stupid to stop and think what kind of god would want his followers to kill other human beings indiscriminately

It has always be so, humans in their stupidity love to fight .
Perhaps women of the world (those who have not been brainwashed) should look to Greek mythology where during the never ending Peloponnesian War Lysistrata persuaded Greek women to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers until they agreed no negotiate peace.

TBH Pummy they are so far from being mentally well and fit I would say they are not sane.

In 1820s I am guessing a lot of people did what they were told to do by a few people at the top and reading about for instance the captains of the ships who carried prisoners to Australia they were clearly sick sick men who would have benefited from therapy at the very least. But they were men of their times too when human life was cheap and the Christian religion was full of fire and brimstone and people were not allowed to ask questions about that religion and tended to become rather disturbed and evil about how they lived.

The KKK and various other groups also twisted and turned the Christian religion to fit their purpose, again I would question their mental fitness.

Is conditioning and programming any different to being mentally ill ? If someone goes down this fundamental route with religion or anything else (met some very odd sci fi fans at times) then their mental well being is impaired IMO
