Thomas Hardy's "The Trumpet Major" was one of the books I had to study for GCE way back in the mist of times. The other book was "Youth and Gaspar Ruiz" by Joseph Conrad must say I enjoyed them both.
However nit picking our way through the Shakespeare's "As you like it" that was different and should count as an undeserved punishment.
I loved pretty much everything we had to read in school English - Shakespeare, Chaucer, Milton, Browning, Wordsworth, Conrad, T.S.Eliot, Hardy, A.E.Houseman etc etc. - Austen was the only one I could not abide at any price.
