I think they're all very bad at this "one-size-fits-all" type of presenter these days because to be honest some of them do not have what I would consider to be good voices for narration.
I have no end of problems with the over-powering music that they seem to dub onto almost any programme but coupled with an ineffectual narrator with no nice, clear speaking voice it is a nightmare for me!
The annoying thing is that often they seem to able to dub all this music on to the recorded programmes but the Subtitles are run as it's broadcast, meaning that they are miles behind what's being said and often full of errors!
Lip reading's often no good either because the narrator's face is not shown.
I was interested in a programme serious recently but they used some actor who had the most annoying delivery; it was soft at the start of a sentence or tailed off at the end - almost incoherent to me.
That might go down well on the big screen in an acting role but not narration!
As a slight aside from that, I see the BBC's being accused again of political bias by Conservative MPs again but did anyone see The Ottomans; Europe's Muslim Emperors?
The bias to me on that programme was pretty obvious and I don't know if Rageh Omar - the presenter - is a Muslim but I felt that he skipped around the more unpleasant history of the Ottomans!
Back on topic though, I think the constant use of well-known actors or presenters on serious subjects is excessive and many do not have what I would call a good "radio" voice for narration.
Just listen to people like Roger Moore for example or Ken Bruce - now there's two first-class "radio" voices! stevmk2
