Re: Weird expressions

Two of my Grandma's -

"Hell's bells and spiders ankles!"

Naturally we had to go looking for spiders to check if they really had ankles.

"Would you look at the time - past 8'o'clock and not a child in the house washed"

Which used to really puzzle us as we were not allowed down to breakfast until we were washed !

Re: Weird expressions

Back in NZ, we would say 'rattle your dags' when telling someone to hurry up, or to get a move on.

Dags being the dried excrement hanging from a sheep's rear end which supposedly rattled when they ran.
I never heard it though, as they were always shorn before they got that bad!

Re: Weird expressions

Put a sock in it.... meaning ‘Shut Up’.

Going all round the Wrekin.... was that to go out of your way?

Well blow me down with a feather...when you’re surprised by something.

Re: Weird expressions

If my nan had a piece of cake with very little dried fruit in it she'd say they must have chucked them in from top of galley hill. That must have been a very local expression, she came from Hastings bexhill area.

She had a few others wood in the door, empty vessel make most noise, Boredom is sign of a boring mind, want what you need not need what you want. Many others she was full of them.
