Re: Move over rich list

I bet the uni was a lot nicer in your wifes day, some of them now don't know how to say please or thank you, or even speak English. Not many locals seem to like the oysters but as we have the oyster festival every year, we're still protective of them. In the short time I've had them my toms and me have been through some harrowing times together. I rescued them from B&Q's they were on the way out, I left them out in the cold, Monty, [the dog] knocked them flying and I had to repot them, yes we've had some shared memories together. Just can't wait to eat them if they survive that long.

Re: Move over rich list

But, I think I'd actually miss the annual ritual of starting them from seed and watching the miracle of growth.

That`s how I feel but ,luckily for me, many others do not.

You are right there - last year (my first time with toms) I bought them all from car boot sales and DIY stores etc. It gave me such a buzz looking after them. This year - the thrill is even greater - all grown from seed - dozens of varieties. I am sure they will taste all the sweeter when I get to eat them. I have plans (if I get a glut) to bottle the excess for over winter.

And yes OG - I am a tomaholic too!! I can eat them like apples

Re: Move over rich list

I'm glad we share fellow feelings about it, OG, PPH!

I'm a fruit and cheese for lunch person, and the fruit is a dead-ripe garden tomato during the Summer months. Never touch supermarket tasteless tomatoes in Winter, bah!

Re: Move over rich list

I agree DM, shop bought toms are very sharp and no flavour, I don't eat a tom until I can go out and pick my own, I do miss a cheese and tom sandwich though, fresh crusty bread and the seeds of the tom ooze out all down the front, worth all the looking after.

Re: Move over rich list

A ripe tomato sliced horizontally in thick slices, spread with minced garlic, chopped fresh basil, a good grind of pepper and topped with shredded mozzarella and popped under the broiler ....ambrosial! And some good crusty bread to sop up the juice!

Its making me very hungry, my toms aren't even hardened off, never mind flowering and turning red.Talk about tickling sticks, has anyone had to pollinate their own fruit or veg? Did I see someone on Gardeners World doing something with a paintbrush, or was I dreaming? I think it was a peach tree.

Oh yes. And it used to be a rabbit`s tail or some such.

Do try to watch

I've been into iris hybridizing on and off for years, and yes, do use a teeny little paintbrush to transfer the pollen.
