Re: Where do a lot of you,

I learn things from all sorts of sources.

Remarkable as it sometimes seems, I have manage to retain some of the things I learned at school and college.

My work took me around the country and later to different parts of the world. I learned a lot from talking to the natives, often over a pint or half litre of beer, concerning that country's culture and politics.

I also made myself familiar with work related acts of parliament, elfin safety law, went on courses on how not to get killed or injured and how not to kill or injure others. That part at least seems to have sunk in as I have yet to fail on all counts, although it has been close on occasions!

I use the internet, but try to use reliable sources and always try to cross reference results. I sometimes still use the printed word as well.

As for opinion, I have those as well, and I try to be rational and base them on fact, but opinions by their nature can be quite abstract and arbitrary. Always remember, other opinions are available.

Last of all, I do make mistakes. After all, I am only but a man. A simple machine for turning beer into wee wee.
Unfortunately people only tend to listen to me when I am wrong.

If there is one thing I have learnt it is not to quickly accept somebody else's information and/or opinions for facts, even from those in authority and those who purport to know

I have always been an observer first and foremost and tried my best not to easily accept things which people take for truths and facts until I have tested and worked it out for myself.

I was brought up to look at all things, question and listen but in the end to think things out for myself when reaching conclusions. Obviously, I learned at school/uni and I have always been an avid reader - when I was younger it was mostly non fiction stuff that attracted me. I can remember times when I came home from school with something I had been told in class and my dad becoming quite angry. He was not shy about going into school to challenge what was being told to us in school and it was he who taught me to question all things, because there is usually more than one side to just about everything and a lot of information handed out can be horribly biased or downright false. These days I look to the internet for information, but rarely rely on one source only these days, because I discovered fairly early on that there are many variations on the truth on the tinterweb, as in life, and whilst being a wonderful resource and it is an easy way to gather information (good and bad) is also a fertile ground for propaganda and misinformation and I have been caught out purely by accepting things written and by being too lazy at the time to look deeper.

Re: Where do a lot of you,

The trouble with the stuff we learnt at school is that most of it has changed; weights and measures, Countries, flags, science even dinosaurs. I used to get twenty odd correct answers on University challenge, last night I only got seven.

Re: Where do a lot of you,

I read a lot about things l want to know more about, either via the internet or books I the library.
I would hate to speak about something that l didn’t really know much about, as l would feel foolish and probably feel out of my depth.

Probably why some think I post rubbish!
I guess that's me too. No you don't post rubbish, unless the thread title tells you to.
