I agree. In this case the USSR / CCCP that I remember was quite an bit different from your description though it certainly become more frayed around the edges as the 1980's advanced.

I do believe that the divisions between the Republicans and Liberals is widening at an accelerating rate though and the common ground is decreasing.

I completely agree with Surfermom, and I would add that entirely too many young men/women are spoiled rotten by their parents and now feel "entitled" to everything that we had to work hard to obtain.

I can't argue with any of that and was there for the first time for any length of time in the eighties.
