But if you're a hardened street drinker £3.50 to £11.25 is quite the jump in price. There won't be a category of cheap drink anymore such as cheap food, clothes etc.

definitely a steep jump in price, but, as I say, somehow I imagine they will find the money.

Re: £11.25 for a bottle of cider

Government have been successful in reducing smoking, in the hope of reducing the number of people who have bad health from doing so. Maybe they are now trying to reduce drinking for the same reason.
A lot of pubs are noticing a reduction in income, so alcohol sold at shops is now how a lot of people get their drinks.

I wonder how they are going to stop the population from becoming obese...... because that costs the NHS a fortune?

This is because the Scottish Government has introduced a 50p per unit of alcohol price rise effective from today.

A range of other drinks will also increase in price.

I think this will fuel a rise in home brewing and distilling.

I don't think it will affect hardened drinkers. The families will suffer before some people give up their booze. They're the ones who should be discouraged, the one's who end up with ill health or spouses and kids in A&E or no grocery money.
Discerning drinkers will still enjoy a glass or two but appreciate it more I think.

That does not make sense.

A litre bottle sells for £15 in ALDI

A Litre bottle is 40 units which before profit should be £20 a bottle

The price of alcohol is way more expensive in Canada than the US. It's also less in Quebec than Ontario...Go figure!
