Re: Famous Detectives.

It was on ITV3 I believe, may be wrong, before Xmas, no doubt it will be repeated before long. I'll shout if I spot it!

Great thank you hope it does as we both really enjoyed it first tie round. Books are good too but you would never cast RC as Hamish if you read them first.

Re: Famous Detectives.

I love Detective series.
My favourites were Taggart, Morse, and the lovely Frost. I still
watch the reruns even though I have seen them about 3 times.
Cant stand Miss Marples just cant get the gist of that.
I did used to watch Shoestring with Trevor Eve but cant remember
the stories and they don't seem to be repeated

Shoe string was repeated a couple of years ago, sadly it had aged very badly indeed. Stories were still good though.

Re: Famous Detectives.

I rarely read detective-type fiction but my favourites on the small screen are Jonny Lee Miller in the US series Elementary plus Nathan Fillion in Castle - both entertaining in their own way, although Jonny's anguished modern-day Sherlock can be off-putting for some.

Miller is British but I've only ever seen him on US TV imports - seems rather intense at times, bit like James Woods, who I personally think was a greatly underrated actor. stevmk2

Jeremy Brett was the ONLY Sherlock as far as I'm concerned so definitely my favourite detective.
Also loved Morse, Vera and the Scandi series Wallender etc.....seems I have quite a few 'favourite' then!

Was it Basil Rathbone that played him in the films?

Oh I'm sorry Patsy for that sacrilege, I completely forgot. The Toff and his 'man' Jolly used to solve all sorts of crimes from the 1930's up to the 1950's, toffee nosed detectives were all the rage then, you had Lord Peter Wimsey and the gentleman burglar Raffles, there were more but I can't remember them off hand, they always had a manservant to help them, Bunter was Lord Wimsy's man and a right lickarse he was too. I suppose there wasn't much toffs were good at besides hunting and fishing, so the writers may as well put them in the crime businness and make a few bob outa them.
