It is always awkward knowing what to do under these circumstances. I agree with everyone else send him a carefully chosen worded card, and see if you get one back from him. If you get one back will show if he wants to stay in touch if not then next year your decision should be easier.

When a partner passes away that is the time when friends and relatives are needed. Unfortunately some family members tend to drift away.

A single person can feel restricted to some extent, such as going out for a meal -dance-show-holiday as they have no one to go with especially if that person is female.

A close friend we have known for well over 40 years she is in exactly that predicament, so goes out for walks or for a coffee by herself. It must get very lonely, So we do our best by daily ringing and having her around for chats etc.

It must be terrible when family or friends then tends to shun away a person after such a loss and not realise that is when they are needed the most
