They are sometimes, used by unmarried mothers to incorporate both parents surname. That's not so bad but when the child has a double-barrelled christian name too, it can become a bit ridiculous!

From time to time I think what it would be like if I simply inserted a hyphen between my B and my R.
The R is rather common, but the B is quite the opposite. Hyphenated, I think they would make me sound quite posh!
On the other hand, I think chavvy might me nearer the mark.
