Re: Why we are fatter today
eating seems to have become a 24hr habit
As other here have posted, growing up we got our meals and that was it, none of this grazing and fizzy drink all day malarkey
Having any food or drink outside of the house was a rare treat. Now and then mum would buy us a fizzy drink ( zing was the brand) at Woolworths whilst she stopped for a cuppa, but that really was a rare treat, probably in the Christmas run up and shops where heaving. Dad would sometimes treat us to a bag of crisps or nuts from the pub
Biscuits were a mid morning Sunday treat, not a daily fixture
And we walked everywhere, 3 miles to school and back again, two miles to the shops, 4 miles to the cinema, we walked everywhere. Housework took twice as long, you really did have a work out just doing a wash, hanging the mats over the line to beat clean, sweeping and mopping the Lino
Food was proper food. Meat, fish and veg. Yes we had suet puddings, bread and dripping and we cooked with lard, but everyone needed it because we worked it all off
Nowadays you only have to look at what people are putting in their trolly to know why they are obese. Everything prepared for them, even down to roast potatoes. Plus the choices are just mad. My Tesco has a whole aisle dedicated to crisps. another dedicated to chocolate and biscuits and another to fizzy drink, yet the fish is squeezed into a 3 ft section and the fresh meat is only half an aisle yet the prepared meals and processed meats have two aisles
