I googled....... France has been the centre of perfume design and manufacture since the 17C, partly due to the south of France being perfect for cultivation of the best flowers, and due to the Kings of France giving it great patronage.

So, like the later fashion industry, French perfumes dominated for quality and variety.

The kudos attached to a French perfume name has stuck a bit even to today.

Well, in the same eras, the British didn't wash either!

I think it was the Victorians that started the "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" thing! That's quite late in the day, considering!
