Re: Fair or not?

I personally don't see why people have pets if they are just gong to leave them alone all day.

A pet is meant to be a companion, and they need human interaction and company.

Re: Fair or not?

I guess it depends on the dog and how the dog was trained. Some dogs are so needy that they won't even let one go in another room without them following their master and yet some are more independent. If a dog is used to being left alone from when he was small, he will be ok because that is all he knows. As long as we show them love and treat them right, they will love us back.

When we had our dog, my mother used to watch our sons at our house, so there was always someone with him....as my sons grew older, my mother stopped watching them and our dog was alone from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, when my sons got home. Rex never showed signs of depression nor did we ever find any "damage" that some dogs can cause because because they were "upset".

When we got him, he was 1 years old, we got him during a time I was at home on vacation, what we did was gradually leave him alone and gradually extend the hours he was left alone, so we would see his reaction.

Yes, he was very happy to see them after so many hours....but he would show the same happiness when I went next door to get something lol

Re: Fair or not?

And that is the biggest rubbish /myth sound bite there is!
It's just something people sooth their concisciences with
And if I have heard it once I have heard it a hundred times

With children and dogs its not quality time at all.
It's QUANTITY time .

You can't just come home and say OK it's quality time now
The child / animal might not be in the mood for quality having been left for hours alone .

It you haven't got the time don't have a dog .

Re: Fair or not?

I do sometimes wonder, when I m home all day for them and they sleep all morning if it's me that misses them more than they would miss me, as I said earlier when we have had to leave them they have been fine.

I guess it makes some difference although they are not together exactly as Betty has her cage and Elsie is on the sofa.

So - no! It isn't fair on the dog and can do a lot of psychological damage
.

This makes me very angry. How the hell do people like that expect to house train a pup for a start?
Who is there to take him out for a wee when he wakes up? Who is there to give him his 4 or so feeds and again, take him out for a wee afterwards? And that's before I start on the mental distress.

Owners like that are incredibly selfish, stupid and obvioiusly not done any homework whatsoever on rearing a puppy.
But at the end of the day, the person I blame most of all is the breeder. I lay the blame completely at the breeders door for selling puppies to totally unsuitable homes in the first place.

If a breeder doesn't ask you lots of questions and do their utmost to find responsible, caring homes for their pups, my advice would be - walk away. Chances are they won't have been honest about other things either.
