Pauline, with regard to your obvious love of opera, you surely wouldn't choose someone without the same interests as yourself, nothing would be worse! You would need someone with more or less the same personality as yourself to be truly comfortable with.

You also obviously know that a friend is completely different from a 'true' friend, someone that you have shared all your secrets with, someone who has been there when you needed them, someone who has seen you at your worst, or understands and instantly forgives when you have been a grumpy old bat, someone who knows immediately when to listen instead of talking. It takes a long time to find someone like that.

Your a braver person than me Pauline. If you only want it to be 'an experience' then you will be aware you are with someone who is being 'paid' to be your friend? I don't wish to be unkind but as long as you fully respect that this 'friend' would only be acting out or saying what is expected of them to please you in order to earn their money. However, if that doesn't bother you. Good luck.

Re: Rent a friend.

TThere was a very good film out some years ago called The Walker starring Woody Harrelson , Lauren Bacall and Kristen Scott Thomas .
He was employed to escort society ladies to events their husbands couldn’t attend . I enjoyed it very much because it was a thriller too .
I like the idea of someone like that and would willingly pay .

Crikey, what will they think of next....I wonder how much it would cost to hire...body guard../minder...I would like to experience that for a day...MargaretF....rather than the hot air balloon.

I'm off to count me pennies!...
I would never 'rent a friend' Pauline because they wouldn't be true friends in my view. I would rather go in a hot air balloon than try to make small talk with someone I had hired to be a 'friend'!

I had a very close friend who sadly died of cancer in January and that friend was irreplaceable. I don't mind doing things on my own, my husband is sadly unable to do very much these days due to poor health. I am confident enough and capable enough not to be reliant on anyone else. Each to his own I guess.

No I wouldn't rent anyone to be a friend. I have enough and actually like my own company more, though I do enjoy our lunch catch ups and gossip.
