The towpath rose uphill further along and Alan spotted a nice bench on the brow, so decided to sit and have a rest for a while after his eventful morning. He got a rather damp, squashed sandwich out of a polythene bag in his pocket and as he felt quite peckish, decided to risk eating it.
Just as he had the first bite, a very large male swan came gliding along the river and started eyeing up the sandwich.
"I'll save you a bit matey," Alan said good humouredly, but he hadn't noticed the reappearance of Bertie the dog sitting quietly next to the bench - also eyeing up the food .....
.... Next minute, with a huge flapping of wings, and water spraying everywhere, the swan made a lunge for the food. At the same time, Bertie made a lunge for the swan. Alan fell off the end of the bench, sandwich flying up in the air, while Bertie and the swan both made a wild grab for the flying sandwiches ........
