There were 20,000 death camps similar to Dacau throughout the entire Third Reich all cheek by jowl to the German people they knew what was happening all right.

Most of the notorious death camps were not in areas densely occupied by Germans and they were mainly sold as labour camps to the general population. It's not like the nazis told anyone the truth. But even if they did know there was little they could do or they and their families would be in there next.

Dachau was 3 kms from the village the stench of death was the first thing noticeable by allied troops before they liberated the camps.
Auschwitz was right in the town .
They did know and didn't care.
They had been fed hate propaganda by Gobbels 'big lie' PR machine against the Jewish people which brought out their innate antisemitism
All over Germany they witnessed the terrible treatment of their innocent Jewish neighbours
Therefore the majority of German people were compliant in the murder of millions.

The people who were against this were forced to keep silent because the first people in concentration camps were Germans who didn't agree with what Hitler was doing. Even children were spying on parents so there isn't anything people could do. Others believed passionately in what was happening.
