Re: Pies
Lynne, Dave Whelan started off after finishing playing with Whelan's Supermarket in Wigan and it was a cracker, so mayhap he opened a shop in St Helens as well soon after. This was in the 60s.
Apparently he got a few thousand quid pay-off due to a knee injury so went into business and it all took off from there and he's now a millionaire, but he should NOT have changed the recipe to Pooles' Pies which had been in Wigan for nigh on 50 or more years.
Merz, I'd be glad to hear of what the pies are like. You could buy two for £1 then freeze the other one.
Jimmy, Greenhalgh's give me stomach ache. I only discovered that because after I'd eaten one of their pies I was doubled over with stomach pains, but they do taste good. They put summat in them that doesn't agree with me.
Pooles' Pie Shops used to have folk queuing halfway down the road and Jimmy will confirm that they used to have a little cafe right near the two train stations in Wigan, and it was gorgeous. The pastry was made using the hot-water method and was so thin you could barely pick them up or they'd collapse, then you had to drink the meat pies first. Absolutely deeeelish.
