On a purely pragmatic level, though, does that matter? If the things they join a protest about are worthy of protest and lending their name to it brings attention to the cause, then that's got to be a good thing.
To label those who protest as "bleating" might be a way of belittling those protesting against something you personally agree with.
Of course they do it for publicity, just as those who do it for charity fundraising do. But if the end result is for the good, somebody who is hungry gets fed, an abuse of human rights or the folly of a US president is brought to the public eye, does them getting a bit of publicity really matter? Ends justifies the means.
